BLU and Cyanogen To Launch Android Smartphone

BLU isn’t a brand that most people associate with smartphones, but that may soon change as the mobile startup . There’s no official word yet on when the device will be released, but rumors suggest that it will occur sometime before the holidays. So if you’re looking for a new Android handset that’s not going to cost you an arm and a leg, keep your eyes peeled for the BLU-Cyanogen smartphone.
Of course, this isn’t BLU’s first rodeo. The company has launched several entry-level smartphones in the past, most of which had moderate success on the market. What makes this smartphone different, however, is the fact that it will be running the highly popular CyanogenMod. Granted, it will still run Google’s Android operating system, but the BLU smartphone will run the CyanogenMod in parallel. In case this is your first time hearing about CyanogenMod, let me explain what it is and how it works: basically, it’s a theme that’s used in conjunction with the core Android files. The open-source software adds a plethora of features and customizable options to devices, similar to Samsung’s signature TouchWiz theme.
Earlier this month, Cyanogen announced that it was working with BLU to create a new Android smartphone. But this isn’t just another fly-by-night entry-level handset. While it will technically run Android, it won’t have access to Google Play nor any other Google service. Instead, it will tap into Amazon’s Android app store.
In an interview with Forbes, Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster said, “We’re putting a bullet through Google’s head.” As noted by UberGizmo, this is part of a larger plan by Cyanogen to capture some of Google’s users, making them less reliant on the Mountain View company’s services.
“This is part of Cyanogen’s plan on taking Android away from Google by making users less reliant on Google for their services. Will this experiment be successful? Will users be able to live with access to Google’s services? We suppose only time will tell, but for now there is no word on when we can expect to see this Cyanogen BLU handset to be released.“
Without Google, though, is the new Cyanogen-BLU smartphone destined for failure before it even launches?
